Farmers Market Season is Here

Fruit stands in outdoor market

There are many benefits to buying local produce at farmers markets. When you buy healthy, high quality, and organic produce grown in your area, you’re insuring your family is getting healthy produce, while also supporting local farmers.

Starting in May, Dahlonega’s Farmers Market opens up to offer locals the best vegetables, fruits, and honeys the area has to offer, all of which are produced right here in the North Georgia Mountains.

Achasta Resident Observes Community Bird Houses

Robin's eggs in nest

Achasta resident Margaret Nemac has been keeping a close eye on the community’s bird population as of late. According to her recent report, the nest boxes around the community are full of blue birds tending to their eggs and hatchlings.

“As of April 19, we have 19 nests in the 20 nest boxes on the golf course, “ said Nemac. “One nest box even has five newly hatched blue birds.”

Nemac has counted a total of 80 eggs in all throughout the Achasta community.

The Mountain Flower Art Festival Is Coming Up

For over 20 years, Dahlonega’s historic town square has been the scene for one of the region’s favorite spring events, the Mountain Flower Art Festival.

Every year a number of fine, local artists display their work for the community to see. The festival is a juried collection of art right in the heart of the scenic mountain town.

The festival is a celebration of fine arts and crafts from the area but also the blooming of the beautiful mountain wildflowers.

Some of the featured artwork will be from watercolors, painters, silversmiths, photographers, and weavers.

In addition to the juried selection of art, the Dahlonega Master Gardeners will be having their annual plant sale, a wildflower display, workshops, and a garden expo. The Garden Expo will be held at Hancock Park and will include a large plant and seed sale. Speakers will also be discussing various gardening and plant topics.

Trail Season Opens at Achasta

This spring is the perfect time to get your hiking shoes on and get out onto the new trails at Achasta.  As you see from the pictures, spring has brought out the daffodils and put the forest into bloom.  Take an afternoon to stretch your legs on whichever trail is to your level and liking... we have several of each to choose from.

Azalea Pass (pictured) features an informational sign telling you about some of Georgia's Native Azaleas, which you meander through on the trail.

Transformed River Park Starts To Blossom

The Achasta River Park has undergone a massive overhaul in the past six months.  With the addition of stone planter gardens, interpretive signs, swings, a horseshoe pit, angler accomodations, camp sites, wildlife habitats, and a parkside grill with seating for 20, there's no shortage of outdoor entertainment.  The OutBound program (which initiated these changes), is not even a year old and we're really excited to continue to grow the program in 2010.  Once the summer hits and the flowers we've planted really begin to bloom, it's going to be a site to behold!
