Support Relay For Life This Weekend

On March 26, Achasta residents and Dahlonega community members can experience a night of fun with friends and family while supporting a very worthy cause. This year’s Relay For Life will be held at the Lumpkin County High School Track. Events will begin around 7 p.m. and will last until 7 a.m.

What Is Relay For Life?

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a 12-hour event where teams are asked to take turns walking or running around a track throughout the night. Teams must have a participant on the track at all times. The idea is that cancer never sleeps neither will the participants.

Natural Preservation Plays A Major Role At Achasta

The Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course here at Achasta is a fully certified Audubon golf course.

For those unfamiliar with Audubon certification, we would like to explain the certification and what it means for golfers who play at Achasta.

The Audubon certification represents the seamless unison of golf and nature. During the certification process, every aspect of course design is weighed against the possible environmental implications it may cause. By doing this, certified courses can guarantee the preservation of nature and wildlife while also providing a wonderful golf experience for the avid player.

The Winter Trail Upgrades At Achasta Were A Success

Achasta is happy to announce the completion of our winter hiking trail additions.

There has been almost two new miles of hiking trails added to the already beautiful and adventurous trail system here at Achasta.

We have added Azalea Pass, which is fittingly littered with native azaleas along its edges. This additional trail is half a mile long and connects some of our previously constructed trails to create a more fluid network for hikers.

The newly added Luhi Trail is a challenging climb for hikers. Luhi actually means “climber” in Cherokee and trailblazers should be ready for just that. The end reward of this tough hike is worth the effort. The trail has spectacular year-round views of Mount Yonah in the distance.

Bird Is The Word Seminar

In case you missed it, we had a PHENOMENAL speaker in last week to talk about the many ways of attracting different species of birds to your property.  Georgeann Schmalz walked through a number of different topics and gave out some great information, including info on her Birding Adventures trips to the National Forest in our area.  In the event you missed it, I have some a free pdf I will be happy to email you, as well as a poster (in pdf format) that is available for $3.  The poster is out of print, but includes a number of plants and birds and tells you what plants attract what birds.  The one new thing I'm taking home from the event is that if you want to put up a screech owl house, make the hole 3" in diameter, place it 15-20ft up and have the hole facing another tree, so that the young owls will be better acquainted with their surroundings.  Good stuff!  Join us for our next adventure on March 12th to the NGCSU Planetarium and Observatory.&nb
